Second Life places: Matanzas Island, home of Skate Foss

Had a lovely time tonight visiting my new friend Skate Foss (who I met through Twitter) on her beautiful sim: Matanzas Island. Skate has several  lovely places for rent there for anyone who wants a tropical island refuge for their second life home. She kindly gave me a tour of the public areas for residents, as well as her own beautiful home.

We began the tour in the greenhouse, a place for residents to gather and enjoy quiet conversation, perhaps over a cup of herbal tea grown from the herbs right there.

Just outside the greenhouse is a lovely waterfall, and while the climb up the waterfall is a bit treacherous and slippery, it is well worth the surprise at the top!

Right at the top of the hill is a sheltered nook that holds a tropical rain forest complete with brightly colored birds and even the occasional rain shower.

Skate's own lovely home built of glass and stone is on the beach below.  It has a marvelous view of the ocean.

If you stop by to visit Skate, you will likely land in the public dock area for residents. There are boats for sailing and a nice beach area for swimming and for beach parties. Ask Skate to show you the homes she has for rent; each is different and all are surrounded by sand dunes offering privacy from neighbors. A peaceful and tranquil place to live. No griefers or rudeness allowed!

Matanzas is a beautiful place to see as well as a great place to live. I am delighted to be able to call Skate Foss a friend, and was honored to be invited to visit her there!

The Good / The Not So Good

It has been an odd week and a half for me. Some good, some not so good.

Not good: I lost my best friend. We'd had fights before. But I guess I always had faith that the friendship would survive. We'd blow up, then we'd talk. This time? Not so much. He's gone.

Good: I discovered some things about myself. I am an incurable optimist. I still believe that love and friendship can survive anything if both sides are willing to try. I still hope that someday we can be friends again.

Not good: I lost the only place I ever called home in SL. I should have known it was coming. I did know. But it still felt like getting a rug pulled out from under me.

Good: I found new land in Zindra, in McGavet. I was only half-heartedly looking, but I found a parcel that the previous owner had named "Serendipity Cove." I figured that was too serendipitous to pass up. And the price was right. The tier was, too. So I bought it.

Not so good: I have no one to share it with.

Kind of good: Another thing I discovered about myself this week is that I am at heart a nest-builder. That will be no surprise to anyone who knows me in RL. I am forever making over, rearranging, remodeling, and shopping for my RL home. When stressed I tend to head for Pier 1, Bed Bath & Beyond, or Home Depot. Even changing the colors of the bathroom towels and soaps can make my day. So it should be no surprise that rebuilding in a new space in SL was fairly theraputic as well. And I needed that therapy.

Neither good nor bad: There is some irony in the fact that I (once again) made a romantic spot to hang out in SL. Dancing, cuddles, and even sex animations. Waterfalls, pools, and gardens. I did mention that I am an incurable optimist, didn't I? And even if the man I would most like to share it with is no longer interested in me, well, at least perhaps I can make a nice place for other lovers to visit, to play.

So keep watching, I'll post pictures as I change the seasons at Serendipity Cove and redecorate regularly. Feel free to come by with your loved one and enjoy the facilities, make yourself at home.

The good, the bad, and the beautiful

Odd day yesterday. Some very good things--I was given an amazing gift by a special lover. Some bad things--my desktop computer crashed and burned and is gone, which lead to an argument with another lover.

Bad: I lost track of what day was what, thus confusing my commitments. (I am told that is part of the "SL effect"--the phenomenon whereby things in SL seem more real than things in RL and--if you are not careful--your fantasy can take over your reality.)

Good: I got more (or better) sleep last night than I have had in a week.

Bad: So many men, So little time. Good: Amazing men! One who makes me feel beloved. One who makes me laugh, a lot, to whom I can talk about anything, even RL. One who looks out for me.

Bad: I need to go computer shopping. Good: I'd been planning on buying a new computer anyway, and have the cash. Bad: I have 2 weeks worth of not-backed up files on the hard drive I can't access. Good: I have a access to a great IT department. Bad: I don't have time for this. Good: I can buy more RAM and a better graphics card and a faster processor. Bad: if I buy off the shelf, I am stuck with Windows Vista and SL doesn't run in Vista (neither does my RL wireless access). And if I order, there is the wait. Good: ???

Ever have one of those days when your brain keeps going around in circles?

The Beautiful. . . On the other hand, it is a beautiful day, the sun is shining, remarkable thunderstorms last night cleared the air and watered my gardens. I have many beautiful friends, lovers--physically handsome people, with beautiful hearts, and incredible minds (yes, you ... you know who you are!). Life is good.

So my dears, remember the adage of Auntie Mame: "Life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death!"

Come dance with me?

An evening in Amatsu Shima

Amatsu Shima is a beautiful sim based in Medieval Japan. One of my oldest friends, Corwyn, is a hogosha to a Geisha house there and a member of the group that does recreation of Japanese history and culture.

Tonight he took me to see the new teahouse he had built. A lovely little building that could hold a tea master and four guests for a traditional Chado or Tea Ceremony. The landscaping around the teahouse including a beautiful little waterfall, was done by Suzanne Logan, who runs the geisha house and school there. The garden has a bamboo grove, flowered walkways, and a sweet little bench where we sat and chatted watching herons in The ocean waves crashing on the rocks, a cat circling among the flowers and the rocky paths, and two friends having quiet conversation. A lovely evening in all.

Places to See in SL: the Garden of NPIRL Delights

It is almost too late, this being the last day for this incredible four sim exhibit of fantastic and surreal builds, but if you get time tonight you must go see The Garden of Not Possible in Real Life Delights in Rezzable (click here for the SURL). Loosely inspired by Hieronymus Bosch the Garden is a masterwork of multiple talented builders come together in one spot to create what the NPIRL Blog calls: ". . . not a routine build festival. In fact, it is the first time that such a large number of mostly well-known and well-regarded artists, architects, and scripters have come together to not only embrace and demonstrate art and architecture and landscaping that is 'not possible in Real Life'or NPIRL, but also to construct it around a theme so surreal that a similar effort could not be duplicated in Real Life."

Here is one small example: Last night Draven found himself in a representation of a Salvador Dali painting there! Here's on the left is the original Dali painting, "Crucifixion (Corpus Hypercubus)."
And below to the right is Draven posing on the build in the Garden (or as he put it: "Irish Catholic boy creates Franco-Celtic persona in virtual world and re-enacts The Crucifixion in a surrealist sort of way.") Yes, you too can become one with a piece of art--only possible in SL!

So come out and see the Garden tonight, it's your very last chance!

Beautiful Places in SL: Tiessa's Family Place

Combining the best of Arabian Nights fantasy and Renaissance splendor, Tiessa's Palace in Mournful is a lovely place to stroll or sightsee with a sweetheart on a quiet holiday afternoon.

Teleport in to a lovely garden with large flowers in which you can cuddle, then take the winding stairs up to an observatory room with glass floor and curved windows overlooking the ocean.

Or wander in through plush rooms and find a comfy place to sit and meditate, sip a glass of wine, and even read a good book by a cozy fire.

Whether you wander alone or with a lover, don't miss Tiessa's Palace--a gorgeous example of the best in SL architecture!

Isle of Mists: Where Everyday is Sweetest Day

I discovered a beautiful sim yesterday, a place called the Isle of Mists (Isle of Mists: 97, 119, 23).This entire sim is devoted to lovers, soulmates; and it was created by a lovely lady named Ashira, who also designs some of the most gorgeous jewelry. You can cuddle with your sweetie under an ancient oak, or follow a path to a royal pavilion for a bit of private attention, or meditate amidst butterflies and hummingbirds in a jeweled garden, watch a unicorn drink from a magic pool at the base of a waterfall, or lounge in a hammock in the sky and watch the sunrise in the arms of your beloved.

Aside from the beautiful gardens and the fantastic creatures (don't forget to visit the Unicorn Pool, or Serenity Falls), you have to see the lovely treehouses. One is Ashira's home and the other is her shop where you can buy her very unique "Soulmate" scripted jewelry.

The Soulmate pieces are not only lovely designs, but when set to your beloved partner's presence, they respond by sending out poofs of hearts and love notes. There are wedding ring sets (of course), lockets, and you can even give your beloved the key to your heart. The jewelry will tell you when your lover is near, and the lockets can carry pictures of you and your beloved and even play your special song. Here's a pic of me wearing a soulmate locket. Beautiful isn't it?

So visit Ashira's Isle of Mists. Take your sweetheart. You know Sweetest Day should be everyday, when you are in love. . . .

Quote for tonight: from Kahlil Gibran

When love beckons to you, follow him,
Though his ways are hard and steep.
And when his wings enfold you, yield to him,
Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.
And when he speaks to you, believe in him,
Though his voice may shatter your dreams
as the north wind lays waste the garden.

Song from Last Night: "Desert Rose" by Sting

"Desert Rose"

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of fire
Those dreams are tied to a horse that will never tire
And in the flames
Her shadows play in the shape of a man's desire

This desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

And as she turns
This way she moves in the logic of all my dreams
This fire burns
I realize that nothing's as it seems

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of rain
I lift my gaze to empty skies above
I close my eyes
This rare perfume is the sweet intoxication of her love

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

Sweet desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

Sweet desert rose
This memory of Eden haunts us all
This desert flower
This rare perfume, is the sweet intoxication of the fall

Romantic Places to Go: Heaven and Hell

Looking for a good place to spend some quality time with your sweetie? Try Heaven and Hell. This beautiful sim has it all: fascinating scenery and sex poseballs! Heaven is a series of beautiful gardens and waterfalls with romantic and erotic nooks to explore, Hell is for those into kink and BDSM. Between the two is a nice nightclub with a great dance floor titled (you guessed it) Purgatory.

Menu for a Romantic Dinner for Two

Ladies, you've met that special man. You want to make a special night of it. Don't ask him to take you out, cook for him. Here's the menu:

Filets wrapped in bacon with melted blue cheese
Grilled fingerling potatoes with herbes de Provence
Tossed salad of mixed greens, fresh herbs, and flowers

First the potatoes. You want the tiny new fingerling ones, 1"-2" round, no bigger. Cut them in half, or quarters, pieces small enough to fit easily in a shot glass. Sliver a small onion. Toss this together with enough olive oil to coat. Depending on the season you can add any or all of several fresh herbs: rosemary (has to be fresh, dried rosemary is nasty), buds of lavender (best when full and round but not yet bloomed), or savory. Experiment. Find the herbs, the scents, the flavors that you like, that he likes. If mixing flavors scares you buy a bottle of "Herbes de Provence"--a blend of these and other flavors. Put the potato mixture on a sheet of heavy duty aluminum foil in a single layer and seal the edges. Throw this on the grill first, it will take about 15-20 minutes. Turn often. (If your grill is small, you can do these in the oven at about 400 degrees. Still need to turn often!)

Now for the steaks. You want two 7 oz. fillets (9 oz. if he's a man of hearty appetite). Roll the edges in crushed peppercorn, then wrap a thick slice of bacon around the edge. Secure with toothpicks. Let him do the grilling. It more fun to play together. Meat is more tender when rare, but the center must be barely warm (not cold) and still red (but not too bloody). At the very last minute add some crumbled Stilton bleu cheese to the top of the steak.

While he's grilling the steaks you toss the salad. Mixed spring greens are best, some carrot shredded, more fresh herbs (cilantro, tarragon, a tiny bit of fresh mint), some little grape tomatoes, maybe some mandarin oranges, strawberries sliced, some sunflower seed, and some fresh flowers. There are many edible (and tasty) flowers to add to your salad. Rose petals are good--be sure they are from the tiny Damask roses or wild roses, not those huge hot house flowers from the florist that have neither flavor nor scent!) Nasturtium blossoms add a peppery taste. Purple chive blossoms add a hint of onion. No, you are not likely to find these in your corner market, you have to grow them. It isn't hard, but it does take serious advance planning!

You can use any salad dressing you like but I recommend a raspberry-walnut vinaigrette. You can make your own or if you want to go with store bought, Ken's and Newman's are both good brands. Go easy on dressing, you want to flavor, but not overwhelm a salad.

Drinks? A red wine: a Merlot or a Shiraz. I am partial to the Aussie reds. Find out what he likes though. Is he a beer drinker? I like Blue Moon with sliced oranges, but some men find that a bit frou-frou. Get him to try something new. Tsingtao, a light Chinese beer or Negra Modelo a dark creamy Mexican brew.

Let's talk about salt and pepper. None of this canned black pepper or iodized salt junk. You need, if you don't already have them salt and pepper grinders. There are many peppers: red, green, white, pink and black. I prefer a mix of several. As for salt, sea salts are the best. I use Celtic grey sea salt for meats, a lighter Hawaiian red alae for vegetables.

Set the table for two in the garden (double benefit to growing your own!); use the best china, silver, linen napkins, fine crystal. Light candles everywhere. Dress up a bit, something slinky.

Music is your own choice, I'd uses Vangelis' soundtrack to the movie Blade Runner.

Enjoy the meal. Speak only of happy things, beautiful things, let go of the stresses of the day.

Dessert? Did I forget about dessert? No, I didn't. Be dessert. Make it sweet for him.
